One of the biggest challenges I hear from my golfing clients is that they have difficulty creating separation between the upper body and the lower body during the backswing (which will then lead to difficulties in the downswing).
Sometimes, the problem is mobility (stiff mid-back or hips).
Sometimes, the problem is stability & motor control (can you keep your pelvis still while you move your upper body?)
Often, it’s both.
A great exercise to address this is called Book Openings.
In Book Openings, the goal is to create a stable pelvis while allowing for the upper body to be assisted by gravity to then get some mobility in the mid-back.
All the while, you can utilize your breath to create a bit more movement in the rib-cage, which will not only facilitate those deep core muscles, but because of how the rib connects to the spine, it will also assist with creating more spinal movement in all the right places.
This is a great exercise to learn or perform before learning how to manage the pelvis and spine in an upright position because here, you can be mindful of the movement quality and use gravity as assistance versus resistance.
Give it a try and let me know in the comments section below how it went!
